Jeffs and Oler Appeal Lindberg Ruling

Associated Press – September 9, 2009 6:15 PM ET

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – Two polygamous church bishops are asking the Utah Supreme Court to overturn a district court’s decision that they claim denies them their constitutional right to carry out their ecclesiastical duties.

Lyle Jeffs is the bishop for Hildale, Utah, and Colorado City, Ariz. His brother, Warren Jeffs, is the jailed prophet of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

James Oler heads the faith’s Bountiful, British Columbia branch. As bishops they are expected to provide for the spiritual and physical needs of church members.

Both men sought to intervene on behalf of the FLDS in a 3rd District Court dispute over a church land trust under state control since 2005.

In July, a 3rd District Court Judge Denise Lindberg rejected their request.

  1. is this lyle who was sally’s husband and father to leann, pamela and janet

  2. The old flds stimulus plan in operation. More short creek consecrations going to gentile attorneys. The short creek flock is going to get sheared to the bare, bare skin.

  3. ProudTexan — you’re thinking of Leroy Jeffs.

This is Lyle Jeffs — Warren’s brother, rumored to be new leader of FLDS

  4. thanks FLDS. you’re right. this is yet another jeffs.

  5. Warren is still prophet and puppet master.

Lyle has been #1 puppet since Warren went to jail and while Warren was running from the Feds.

Now is Warren still able to keep a tight pull on Lyle’s strings or has Lyle cut the bond.

The Jeff and Jessop families have to keep the dream of Zion alive or all falls apart.

  6. I fail to see what the trust decisions have to do with the performance of “ecclesiastical duties.”

  7. Nor do I, Rattle. Who do they think (or hope) they are fooling, the tithers? The real world hasn’t been propagandized to believe such foo.

  8. Anonymous, good observations, thanks.

  9. Texasrattle,

They are trying to relate the ownership of the trust to religious freedom, something they have already done and failed at. If they do not control who lives where, then they lose a key point of power over their ‘flock’.

  10. Actually, the “keys to the kingdom” is the WEALTH of the selected few… (land, businesses and control)

  11. They are trying to relate the ownership of the trust to religious freedom

That makes sense since lindberg is trying to deprive them of ownership on account of their religion

Actually, the “keys to the kingdom” is the WEALTH of the selected few… (land, businesses and control)

Deputydawg, what if it was? Did the “poor” majority FLDS hire you to speak for them?

I mean really, if the takeover of their land by the courts is such a great thing for the FLDS, why are they so bitterly resisting Wisan?

  12. Gee duane, I thought pliggy hired you to speak for the flds on these boards, not deputy dog. Don’t think pliggy is getting his money’s worth from your carp.

  13. So, this is the only “religion” in the world whose “ecclesiastical duties” depend on real estate. How spiritual.

  14. Well, they also depend upon the ability to distribute willing teen age breeding stock.

  15. Betty, I would take the “willing” part out of your statement, then totally agree with it.
