More Mann Act

I came across this in recent article in the Houston Chronicle about another lowlife child molester indicted for federal Mann Act charges:

Barry Lernard Davis, 33, who is also known as “Sir Lewis,” was arrested on charges of sex trafficking of a minor and transportation of a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity regarding the high school student last seen here in September 2006, U.S. Attorney Tim Johnson and Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott announced.

Davis was also charged with coercion enticement of another female to travel in interstate commerce to engage in prostitution, officials said in a written statement.

From June 2006 through September 2006, Davis recruited the minor and then took her to Louisiana with the intent that she engage in prostitution, prosecutors allege. Davis is also accused of enticing and coercing another female to travel from Texas to New Jersey, New York, Missouri, Illinois, Louisiana and Washington, D.C. to engage in prostitution.

Davis could be sentenced to up to a life in prison and fined $250,000 if convicted.

I was under the impression that there were rarely charges brought under Mann Act.    I would be interested in knowing of other cases if anyone has knowledge about those, particularly in light of Alamo’s 10 count convictions and what appears to be solid evidence of Mann Act offenses committed by various members of the FLDS Priesthood.

  1. Here’s one just last year.

  2. We have underage “prostitutes” [aka, forced sex workers] on the streets here, where I live. They are lured from out of state [usually on the internet] with promises of…->insert promise here. They end up being pimped out on “the Boulevard” 8-10 hrs a day/night. There was a group…I don’t know if they are still around…called PHD…Pimpin’ Hoes Daily that “employed” young runaway girls. They move them from city to city. Now, they don’t have to work the streets as much, thanks to Craig’s list and the like. They advertise there with vaguely coded words like…”All the plesure you can stand for just 100 Roses!” I’m not sure why the web owners of Craig’s list, et al, aren’t charged with pimping and pandering, since they facilitate it. But, I digress….
The Mann Act needs to used more to prosecute these snakes. Round them all up, send ’em off to prison…together!

  3. Friday April 30,2004
We left R1 that afternoon and traveled to Mesquite Nevada. I made phone calls along the way. I had Bishop William Edson Jessop gather the six ladies. I talked to each group of ladies, Tom Barlow’s wives first, then Don Holms former wives, and then David Jeffs former wives.

these are women whose husbands were X out, and now Warren was having Men carry them across state lines to be remarried illegally to other men.

  4. Warren goes on to say, He sent Merril Jessop back to short creek ARIZONA from NEVADA with Madeline.

He then separately took susanna , David Jeffs “first wife” who I might add DID NOT want to be remarried to another man,and married her to Jim Allred!!

This has to be against the LAW!!!!

  5. There is MORE than enough evidence in the dictations to arrest and convict many men for the MANN act.

  6. The Lord gave me a special revelation concerning her and the others, that when a woman commits adultry, she can’t even be considered to be restored, until she pays the penalty, which would be into the next life, unless the Lord gives a direct commandment. I have told Lorin Johnson that he may NOT get his wife back again. She is not worthy…..

But, taking men’s wives away from them and giving them to other men is one of two things, prostitution or adultry… Someone needs to tell Warren Jeffs that, and all the other men who belong to Flds.

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) – An illegal immigrant from Guatemala has admitted taking a Connecticut girl to Maryland for sex.

Twenty-six-year-old Walter Aguilar pleaded guilty Monday to violating the federal Mann Act, taking a minor across state lines to have sex. The case involves a 14-year-old Norwalk girl.

Officials say Aguilar drove the girl to Hyattsville, Md., in February after she told her parents she was going to a birthday party.

Aguilar faces several years in prison and being deported when he’s sentenced in October.

FBI agents found Aguilar and the girl four days after she was reported missing from Norwalk.

  8. WASHINGTON – A child sex offender with multiple prior convictions for offenses against children has been sentenced to life in prison on both counts for which he was convicted, to run concurrently, Assistant Attorney General Alice S. Fisher of the Criminal Division and Timothy J. Fuhrman, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Salt Lake City Division, announced today.

Ferlin Killsnight, 47, formerly of Lame Deer, Mont., pleaded guilty on Oct. 2, 2007, to two counts which charged him with knowingly transporting a minor and traveling in interstate commerce for the purpose of engaging in illicit sexual activity. In his guilty plea, Killsnight admitted that he transported a person he knew to be 16 years old from Billings, Mont. through Idaho to Seattle, Wash. and that he did so for the purpose of engaging in illicit sexual activity with the minor. Killsnight was indicted for these offenses by a federal grand jury in Billings on Sept. 20, 2006.

  9. Human trafficking prosecutions such as this one are a top priority in the Department of Justice. In the last seven fiscal years, the Civil Rights Division, in conjunction with the U.S. Attorney’s Offices, has increased by nearly seven-fold the number of human trafficking cases filed in court as compared to the previous seven fiscal years. In Fiscal Year 2007, the Department obtained a record number of convictions in human trafficking prosecutions.

  10. Man Sentenced to 10 Years For Role in San Antonio Sex-trafficking Ring
WASHINGTON – Timothy Michael Gereb was sentenced today in federal court in San Antonio to 10 years imprisonment for his role in a sex trafficking ring involving at least one teenage girl, the Justice Department announced today. After his release from prison, Gereb will be on lifetime federal supervised release. Gereb is one of five defendants named in an indictment filed in San Antonio in June 2007 following a federal sex trafficking investigation.

During his guilty plea hearing on Feb. 25, 2008, Gereb admitted that he recruited a Mexican girl under the age of 18 years to engage in prostitution in San Antonio. Additionally, Gereb admitted that he conspired with others to transport at least three illegal aliens across the border between the United States and Mexico for the purpose of establishing a prostitution business.

  11. And just a few more:

Defendant Caught By FBI and Alpharetta, Ga. Police Undercover Operation

ATLANTA – Brian Schumaker, 57, of Mississagua, Ontario, Canada, was indicted today by a federal grand jury on charges that he used the Internet to attempt to entice a child to engage in sexual activity, traveled across State lines to engage in sexual activity with a child under 12, and distributed child pornography.

“This is yet another disturbing case of a middle-age man who allegedly traveled a long way to Georgia with the intent of sexually exploiting a child,” said United States Attorney David E. Nahmias. “We commend the FBI and the Alpharetta Police Department for their fine work on the Safe Child Task Force. In these undercover operations we take advantage of same Internet anonymity that the pedophiles exploit. Just as victims often do not realize that the person conversing with them over the Internet is really a pedophile, the pedophiles now face the risk that the person they are enticing is a cop instead of a real child.”

According to United States Attorney David E. Nahmias and the documents and information presented in court: From July 3, 2007 until August 3, 2007, the defendant allegedly used the internet to try to arrange a meeting with a child under the age of 12 for the purpose of engaging in sexual activity. During the week of July 31, 2007, the defendant traveled by car from Ontario, Canada to Atlanta to meet the child. The indictment also alleges that the defendant transmitted images of child pornography during one of the internet communications, or “chats.”

There was no actual child. Instead the chats were part of an undercover operation. According to court documents, SCHUMAKER communicated on the internet with an undercover Task Force officer from the Alpharetta, Georgia, Police Department posing as an 11 year-old girl and her “mother.” On August 3, 2007, the defendant was arrested by FBI agents and Alpharetta officers at the location where he had arranged to meet the “mother.”

ATLANTA, Ga– Wan J. Kim, Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights; David E. Nahmias, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia; Gregory Jones, Special Agent in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation; and Richard Pennington, Chief, Atlanta Police Department, today announced that Jimmie Lee Jones, also known as “Mike Spade,” 31, of Stone Mountain, Georgia, pleaded guilty yesterday to federal charges of conspiracy to engage in sex trafficking and transporting young women across state lines for purposes of prostitution. Just after his trial began, Jones admitted to U.S. District Court Judge William S. Duffey, Jr. that he had lured and coerced eight young women – including two juveniles – into prostitution.

“The defendant in this case took advantage of numerous young women by enticing them with promises of modeling contracts and then using force, threats, and coercion to force them to work as prostitutes,” said Assistant Attorney General Wan J. Kim.

U.S. Attorney David E. Nahmias said, “This defendant’s guilty plea vindicates numerous young women who fell prey to his scheme and were forced and coerced into prostitution at his hands. APD first brought this case to our attention after hearing from his victims, who were brave enough to come forward. We will pursue criminal operations involving human trafficking, such as this one, with the greatest vigor.”

United States Attorney John L. Brownlee announced today that former Greene County Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant Leftery N. “Terry” Tsouroutis, age 38, formerly of Greene County, Virginia, was sentenced to serve 27 months in a federal prison for violating The Mann Act and Making False Statements to FBI Agents. The Honorable Norman K. Moon, in United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia in Charlottesville, imposed the 27 month prison term on Mr. Tsouroutis. Today’s sentence and punishment was imposed after Mr. Tsouroutis, on December 17, 2007, pleaded guilty to transporting a 19-year old state prisoner across state lines for the purpose of engaging her in prostitution. Mr. Tsouroutis also pleaded guilty to making several false statements to FBI Special Agents.

  12. But I’m sure that every case that you’ve all listed is a case of religious prosectuion. After all, the Bible says that men should have sex with little girls. So does the Qu’ran, the Torah, the Book of Mormon, the Buddhist scriptures, and so on and so forth… (After all, who said that the Bible is actually the source of truth in this world anyway? Go by it and you really have to go by all the other “holy” scriptures too.)

  13. FLDS Texas, let this be a lesson to you — be careful what you ask for!

  14. Here’s one from my hometown:

“Retired State Supreme Court Justice Ronald Tills; his former law clerk, Michael R. Stebick of Orchard Park; and retired Lockport police Capt. John Trowbridge all pleaded guilty to transporting prostitutes across state lines. Trowbridge is scheduled to be sentenced Wednesday in Buffalo’s federal court, and Tills is scheduled for a pre-sentencing conference Thursday.”

And the investigation, according to the Buffalo News, is going national:

“While the case against the three Buffalo-area Jesters is wrapping up, with sentencings expected soon, federal agents have expanded their investigation and are looking into allegations that illegal activities occurred at outings sponsored by more of the Jesters’ 191 chapters. The local men who pleaded guilty in the Buffalo case, and others, have cooperated with the feds, providing information about Jesters events in other cities.”

  15. Seems everyone BUT the peeps in FLDS are getting “Mann’d”!!! I don’t see what the hold up is. Unless, the Feds are going to spring one huge case with 100 indictments, including the Mann Act.

  16. Soozie,

I’ll go set a Google Alert for that one right now…as soon as I’m done holding my breath.

I’m hoping I’m wrong and Harry Reid really comes through for us. He faced down the Mob and got them out of Vegas, so he’s no pushover. Can he face down his own church and win, too? Or will Texas have to stand alone?

  17. Orin Hatch is Head of Judiciary commettee in Senate,,, NOW do you see why?

  18. Judiciary Committee
    Visit the Committee’s website:

A former chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senator Hatch plays a leading role in shaping some of the most important issues of our time — from abortion to judicial nominations to the fight to keep America safe from terrorism. He joins other committee members pushing for tougher anti-crime laws, civil justice reform to unclog the courts, and legislation to protect individual property rights. He also takes an active role in the confirmation of all judicial nominations, including Supreme Court justices, and has a direct impact on such issues as immigration, antitrust and consumer protection, and issues related to the Constitution and civil rights.

Senator Hatch was also among the authors of the ban against partial-birth abortion, and the senator has consistently taken the initiative to protect women and children by authoring laws such as the Violence Against Women Act, the Missing Children’s Act, the PROTECT Act (AMBER Alert), and other legislation aimed at keeping our children safe from pedophiles and child pornography. He is also a leading advocate for religious freedom —authoring the Religious Liberty Protection Act — and for giving all Americans greater freedom to practice their disparate religions.

A list of his committees and the nature of his involvement in them from his website:

    His comments on polygamy?

“I appreciate your writing to me about your concerns regarding polygamy. It is a difficult issue and I’m glad you shared your concerns and interest. I also appreciate your recommendation of Mr. Ben Bistline’s book “The Polygamists”. Polygamy is a very sensitive issue, especially among Utahns. As you know, practicing polygamy is both against the law and LDS Church teachings. Please do not hesitate to contact me again on any item of interest. Thank you for writing”.

Sen. Orrin G. Hatch (R-Utah) once visited the FLDS church in Hildale and played the organ. He later defended the group when asked about its alleged abuses.

“All I can say is I know people in Hildale who are polygamists who are very fine people. You come and show me the evidence of children being abused there, and I’ll get involved,” he told local reporters. “Bring the evidence to me.”

Hello, earth to Sen. Hatch? We have evidence now, Texas has it.

  19. HA! Spoken like a true politician. It didn’t happen to me…therefore…it never happened!

  20. It was an amazingly long winded piece of nothing. “Thank you for telling me how you feel.” would have sufficed. lol

  21. I read an article where Senator Harry Reid said in April this year, he would reintroduce the Federal Polygamy Task Force bill. Anyone seen the bill number?
